I started volunteering at a non-profit medical clinic in Los Angeles and it’s interesting to see the different patients that come in. I’m learning more about the medical field and illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and high blood pressure. One thing that I’ve gained from the experience is the important of eating a balanced meal, staying away from fast food, and exercising on a daily basis.

To me, there’s an interesting dichotomy that comes to play concerning diet and exercise in southern California. On the one hand, there are farmers’ markets and grocery stores dedicated to homegrown, organic products. There are also gyms dedicated to fitness and a number of locations (beaches, mountains, parks) where people can engage in physical active. On the other hand, there are a number of fast food stores that line the block. As well, the commutes from work in the southern California area are horrendous. People are driving and sitting in their cars at least an hour a day and the public transportation doesn’t have a strong infrastructure.

I don’t want to complain about the issue too much more, so here are some of my suggestions and what I’ve learned at the clinic. If at all possible, walk 30 minutes after eating a meal so that your stomach can be digested. Take advantage of the beaches, mountains, and parks; you’ll be able to commune with nature and get a good workout. In terms of food, make sure to eat as many veggies and fruits a day – five servings would be the recommended daily dosage. Stay away from fast food as much as possible because there’s a lot of fat and sodium packed in it. These and other things can be done to work towards a healthy and happier lifestyle.
